 a) What is meant by a mainstream film ?

Mainstream film is depicted as films that are generally delivered in cinemas, regularly made in the machine that is Hollywood. Ordinary Mainstream films are delivered in cinemas for a brief timeframe and are promoted to draw in mass crowds and make income. The essential capacity of a mainstream film is to bring in cash and make collaboration and establishment.

 b) Briefly explain what a media conglomerate is.

A media conglomerate, media bunch or media establishment is an organization that possesses enormous quantities of organisations in different broad communications like TV, radio, distributing, motion pictures, and the Internet. Media conglomerates take  aim at arrangements that work with their control of the business sectors all throughout the planet is a cutting edge summed up depiction.

 c) Explain two features of independent  film production. Refer briefly to  I, Daniel Blake  to support your   points.

Smaller production businesses produce independent films. They aren't made in the same way as Hollywood movies. Instead, they differ in terms of style and genre. Independent films frequently have hard themes that are more realistic and less escapist than studio films, and are intended to make you think about specific subjects or concerns.

Financing -

Funding for independent film productions comes from a variety of places. Some small production companies may work together on the project by pooling their industry expertise and financial resources Independent production firms can raise funds from individual investors, although most are supported by arts organisations like the British Film Council and the British Film Institute. Independent films are also supported by several television networks, such as BBC Films and Film Four , furthermore independent filmmakers can now seek money via online donations or crowdfunding thanks to the internet.

distribution -

Unlike studio films, which are often released in mainstream theatres, independent production companies enter their pictures in local, national, and worldwide film festivals to obtain exposure with distributors who may later purchase distribution rights. Independent film distribution businesses seek to get independent films released in theatres across the country and around the world - and negotiate DVD, Blu-Ray, and on-demand deals. In comparison to studio films, independent films have a restricted theatrical release, yet there are many venues across the world that cater to independent film audiences and aficionados. Independent films were once thought to have lesser production values than studio films, but this has changed because to technology advancements such as better and more cheap cameras, as well as computer software for special effects and editing. Independent films like Juno have found mainstream success because to their ability to attain great production qualities on a cheap budget.

With I, Daniel Blake the funding was not a big amount as it is an independent film. These films tend to have a small casts which can be main factor for a low budget. The casting of I, Daniel Blake is around 45 cast members however on average a big budget film has around 200 cast members. Furthermore I, Daniel Blake has a more realistic approach rather than more scripted  movies made to bring in   audiences.Daniel Blake was shown in 24 countries and received positive feedback in Europe and other smaller countries. However, when contrasted to an action blockbuster like Doctor Strange, which was released in over 32 countries and grossed over £677 million, the picture only made £11 million and earned mostly excellent reviews.

Question 3(d) you will be rewarded for drawing together knowledge and understanding from across your full course of study, including different areas of the theoretical framework and media contexts.

d) Explain how economic contexts shape mainstream films. Refer to Black Panther  to support your points.

media exam

Beyonce is shown as strong , and mighty  towards the audience this is appeared through her utilization of Direct location, giving an alternate knowledge on society's perspective on ladies, likewise offering capacity to her way of life, this is appeared through her code of clothing choice  and body language having the option to act all the more openly and how she enjoys not how she should act as indicated by society.

Beyonce's body and the manner by which it identifies with her star persona and her African-American character in the 1900's is a critical component in the her Music video as it alludes to bondage, she is inferring that despite slavery  not exisiting any longer there's still mistreatment on black people in 2016. The video is set against a backdrop of the flooding of New Orleans after the tragic incident of hurricane katrina which was associated with racial tension in America.Furthermore, Beyonce includes the voices of New Orleans local celebrities Big Freedia and the late Messy mya. By including both of these native New orleanians makes the song/video much more personal to those from the state and those who lived through that period of hurricane Katrina. Beyonce goes against typical black “norms'' in ways that black people are represented and instead presents herself as an individual rather than a stereotype which alludes with Stuart Hall's representation theory. Stuart said that stereotyping tends to occur when there is inequality of power however in this circumstance Beyonce and her blackness is in power , shedding light on the beauty and many sides to an African American.

Although both videos highlight problems regarding race and problems in society, Childish Gambino has a more direct and less subtle approach to conveying his message compared to Beyonce. The music video is mind boggling, layered and a satirical work of art that presents the issues in America through the type of mainstream society. Mainstream society is the utilization of current moving fine arts (for example dance ) that advances to a mass crowd . The scenery of the music video happens in a stockroom that nearly resembles a jail. The area of the music video and the utilization of room identifies with the social development of society; where people are contained in certain geographic spaces. Also, the music video sheds spotlight on the unpleasant truth of society as being tumultuous and dangerous. The fundamental video revolves around the lead entertainer, Childish Gambino, who addresses America. Gambino wears the old American Confederate uniform clothing, the jeans, and shoes . Moreover, Gambino's persona charms the crowd into consideration like America who bases the world on her. Gambino is similar to America, she appears to be innocuous yet hazardous. For example, the music video shows where Gambino causally moves toward the start of the video and afterward abruptly pauses dramatically with a weapon in his grasp and shoots a man. The bass drops and the presentation for the melody start with "This is America". The music video reproduces the deplorable occasions of the African-Americans lives lost because of police severity and executing and racialized disdain wrongdoing. This video features recent concerns with respect to prejudice, firearm brutality, and utilization of media and amusement in American. Clay shirky’s theory with the audience is that the internet and digital technology have a massive effect on relations between the media and individuals. With Childish Gambino's video, he makes numerous political and general problems evident within the video to create conversation. As society has become more advanced we see that usually for problems to be solved there has to be some sort of outrage which usually ignites through social media ; Childish Gambino successfully conveyed the problems of society even with the subtle references that started people talking.

Both music videos contain dances throughout however I feel as though they have different purposes. In the Formation video  there is  the inclusion of a young B-Boy who is dancing in front of armed officers who are white. The camera then does a wide shot to the wall next to the boy where it says “Stop shooting us” which is acknowledgment of police brutality. You could argue that the feature of the B-Boy dancing in showing self expression , you see the boy enjoying himself whilst the armed police are observing. With this part of the video that could be trying to convey how police tend to watch black people more closely even though they are not  doing anything. Furthermore, I believe that the use of a young boy enjoying himself dancing rather than an adult male could reference Tamir Rice who was a 12 year old boy playing with his toy gun gifted to him when he was shot by police. This could show that no matter your age, being black is more threatening to wider society. Tamir, much like the B-Boy, was enjoying himself but unfortunately that enjoyment came to an end when the police took his life. Unlike Tamir , the young boy was not killed but put his hands up to the police and then the armed police doing the same in return which could symbolise how police could be unified with the black community if they acted in a respectful and calm manner. Also the fact there was a number of armed police to one unarmed black boy could show police can play unfairly to the demise of black people.

However, the purpose of the dancers have a whole different meaning and significance within the story of the song. Childish Gambino has a bunch of black teens constantly dancing within the video doing the latest trends whilst chaos uproars around them. To my understanding this is to show how society is so consumed with trends and what’s going viral rather than the issues occurring right before their eyes, which may even affect them. Furthermore, Childish Gambino himself sometimes would join in with the dancing ; this could resemble how celebrities themselves feed into trends rather than using their platform to speak about the situations going on at the time. Again , as Clay Shirky was trying to convey how the individual is more impressionable through media , so by celebrities creating / joking trends just further leads individuals from focusing on important matters.

In conclusion , both music videos and artist have created amazing pieces of work in which are rich with references and symbolism. Although in this essay we did not get to cover all of those references and meanings , we learn how Beyoncé and Gambino uses imagery to bring awareness and conversation about political and

Social issues. BeyoncĂ©’s Formation is mainly focused on blackness and loving yourself for example when she says “ I like my baby with her Jackson 5 nostrils” , a reference to blue ivy ( her daughter) having beautiful black features in which we should all embrace. On the contrary Childish Gambino doesn’t just focus on blackness yet problems that do affect the masses for example massacre shooting in which he reference the shooting in a church in Charlotte which killed many people.

statement of aims

Statement of aims.

In my work I will be focusing on music marketing for a new upcoming music group with the very known label Roc nation.

When I begin to create my music video, the inclusion of the duo entering a house party accompanied by a wide shot will be at the beginning. This would connote with the “Funky House” undertone in the song in which is sampled by Crazy Cousinz and  Kyla Reids - “Do you mind”. Funky house music has a strong bassline with soul inspired vocals which goes in hand with some sort of love narrative. The theme of the video would be of the duo finding their love interest  and following them as they progress in their relationship; high angle shots would be used in the beginning to show the vulnerability and the low angle towards the end to show the switch in confidence and growth within the relationship.Mid shots and close ups would be used when the artists are performing and cut in for literal references for example when the artists says, “got the hennessy in my hands” , the camera will switch to a the artist hold the bottle. My artists attire for this video will be comfortable highstreet and/or designer wear which is popular among the ages of 18-35 so in a sense will feel familiar when they are viewing the music video. As described before the video will have a love narrative so there will be intimate scenes as the artists pursue their love interests accompanied by slow transitions whilst editing to complement the  slow and chilled vibe of the song.

The magazine I will be making is called “ vibin’ ”, I chose this name for its literal meaning ; people vibe to music. It would contain  many variations of hot topics such as fashion and latest trends as they tie in with the music/entertainment industry. The cover will have a modern look so it can still be suitable for the target audience which is 18-35 however will be marketed for early teens onward. The cost of the magazine will be £2.50 so that people of all backgrounds are accessible to buying the magazine meaning that we generate more money and gain more publicity.

Furthermore a double page spread will be produced based on the artist im using and will be titled “ What Now?”, it will talk about working hard to get noticed but once people notice you …...what happens now? The artist the will explain the struggle of trying to make it , the reality of fame and then how remain humble and private whilst being in the public eye.At the end of the article a inspiration quote hoping to encourage people of all ages that life is what you make it so go for your dream whilst you can.

In Conclusion this statement of aims is what I would be referring to so my practical work is as good as it could possibly be. I am to capture the many themes of the song in both the music video and the magazine without overdoing it.

Black Panther

What makes  Black Panther a mainstream film.

Producers: Kevin Feige and David J Grant

How does Black Panther fit into the marvel universe ?

Black panther is the first black superhero and is also the richest. He is the king of a very wealthy African country who hides their technological advancements from the world in order to protect their way of life. king T'challa is given the powers of the black panther and the black panther suit which is indestructible. As a king he has a big heart  and fights for the beliefs and protection of the civilians of not only hi country but the world. This makes him a great addition to the marvel universe as the other avengers has similar morals hence why they do what they do best......Protect the world.

The genre of the film is scifi/action which is what the Marvel Universe is all about. The genre is extremely popular as is shows you different perspectives of how a futuristic world could be like whilst painting action with spectacular and exhilarating superhero battles. Without fail black Panther would had been an successful hit as most marvel movies are however within a genre like this, the world has not seen a black superhero with a predominately black cast ; withs much representation of people who see very little, action fan or not the movie was too impactful to not watch. The film shows the world an aspect of afro-futurism which explores the different creative perspectives and Africa and how it can influence the future.

The narrative of the film is  upbeat with heartwarming and powerful moments which grips the audience attention
